Clidinium is the ester formed by the formal condensation of benzilic acid and 3-hydroxy-1-methyl-1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. It is commonly used as the bromide for the symptomatic treatment of peptic ulcer disease and to relieve abdominal or stomach spasms associated with colicky pain, diverticulitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. It functions as a parasympatholytic, antispasmodic, and anti-arrhythmia drug. Clidinium is a quaternary ammonium ion, a carboxylic ester, and an organic cation, and is functionally related to benzilic acid and 3-quinuclidinol.
