Gemcitabine is a 2'-deoxyfluorocytidine with geminal fluoro substituents at the 2'-position. It inhibits ribonucleotide reductase and is used in the treatment of various carcinomas, including non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, and breast cancer. Gemcitabine functions as a DNA synthesis inhibitor, prodrug, EC 1.17.4.1 inhibitor, photosensitizing agent, radiosensitizing agent, antineoplastic agent, antimetabolite, antiviral drug, immunosuppressive agent, environmental contaminant, xenobiotic, organofluorine compound, and pyrimidine 2'-deoxyribonucleoside.
