Beclomethasone is a 17alpha-hydroxy steroid derived from a pregnane hydride. It is a prednisolone derivative with chlorine and methyl groups at the 9alpha and 16beta positions, respectively. It functions as an anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic drug. It is classified as an 11beta-hydroxy, 17alpha-hydroxy, 20-oxo, 21-hydroxy, corticosteroid, glucocorticoid, 3-oxo-Delta(1),Delta(4)-steroid, chlorinated steroid, and primary and tertiary alpha-hydroxy ketone. It is functionally related to prednisolone.
