Aphidicolin is a tetracyclic diterpenoid with a tetradecahydro-8,11a-methanocyclohepta[a]naphthalene skeleton. It contains hydroxymethyl groups at positions 4 and 9, methyl groups at positions 4 and 11b, and hydroxyl groups at positions 3 and 9. It is an antibiotic with antiviral and antimitotic properties, acting as a reversible inhibitor of eukaryotic nuclear DNA replication. Aphidicolin functions as an antimicrobial agent, antiviral drug, antineoplastic agent, DNA-directed DNA polymerase (EC 2.7.7.7) inhibitor, DNA synthesis inhibitor, apoptosis inducer, fungal metabolite, Aspergillus metabolite, and antimitotic.
