Levamisole is a 6-phenyl-2,3,5,6-tetrahydroimidazo[2,1-b][1,3]thiazole with S configuration. It is primarily used as the monohydrochloride salt to treat parasitic worm infections in pigs, sheep, and cattle. Previously, it was used in humans as an immunomodulator and adjuvant in chemotherapy for various cancers. It is also used as an adulterant in cocaine. It acts as an antinematodal, antirheumatic, immunomodulator, immunological adjuvant, and inhibitor of EC 3.1.3.1 (alkaline phosphatase). It is the enantiomer of dexamisole.
