It functions as an HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor and is used as a prodrug (bis(t-butoxycarbonyloxymethyl) ester) to treat chronic hepatitis B. It is classified as a 6-aminopurine, an ether, and a DNA synthesis inhibitor, and is functionally related to adenine. It also acts as a drug metabolite, an antiviral drug, and a nephrotoxic agent. It is the conjugate acid of adefovir(1-).
