Aclidinium is a carboxylic ester formed by the formal condensation of the carboxy group of 2-hydroxy(di-2-thienyl)acetic acid with the hydroxy group of N-(3-phenoxypropyl)-3-quinuclidinol. It is used as its bromide salt for the long-term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It functions as a bronchodilator and muscarinic antagonist. It is a quaternary ammonium ion, a carboxylic ester, a thiophene-containing compound, and an aromatic ether. It is functionally related to 3-quinuclidinol.
