Product Information

5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl beta-D-galactoside is an indolyl carbohydrate and beta-D-galactoside derived from 3-hydroxy-1H-indole, substituted at positions 4 and 5 with chlorine and bromine, respectively. It is used as a chromogenic substrate to detect beta-galactosidase, which cleaves the glycosidic bond to release 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-hydroxy-1H-indole. This compound rapidly dimerizes to form an intensely blue product. It is also classified as an organochlorine, organobromine compound, and D-aldohexose derivative.
