Desferrioxamine B is an acyclic desferrioxamine derived from butanedioic acid. One carboxy group undergoes formal condensation with the primary amino group of N-(5-aminopentyl)-N-hydroxyacetamide, while the second carboxy group undergoes formal condensation with the hydroxyamino group of N(1)-(5-aminopentyl)-N(1)-hydroxy-N(4)-[5-(hydroxyamino)pentyl]butanediamide. It is a siderophore produced by *Streptomyces pilosus* via the DesABCD enzyme cluster, functioning as a high-affinity Fe(III) chelator. It acts as an iron chelator, siderophore, ferroptosis inhibitor, and bacterial metabolite. It is the conjugate base of desferrioxamine B(1+) and the conjugate acid of desferrioxamine B(3-).
