Fusidic acid is a steroid antibiotic isolated from the fermentation broth of *Fusidium coccineum*. It functions as a protein synthesis inhibitor, an EC 2.7.1.33 (pantothenate kinase) inhibitor, and an *Escherichia coli* metabolite. It is a 3α-hydroxy steroid, 11α-hydroxy steroid, sterol ester, steroid acid, α,β-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, and steroid antibiotic. It is the conjugate acid of fusidate and derives from a hydride of 5α-cholestane.
