Protectin D1 is a dihydroxydocosahexaenoic acid with the structure (4Z,7Z,11E,13E,15Z,19Z)-docosahexaenoic acid, featuring hydroxy groups at positions 10 and 17 (10R,17S-stereoisomer). It is a specialised proresolving mediator and functions as an anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, PPARgamma agonist, apoptosis inhibitor, hepatoprotective agent, human xenobiotic metabolite, and secondary allylic alcohol. In neural tissues, it is known as neuroprotectin D1. It is also a conjugate acid of protectin D1(1-).
