Sulfasalazine is an azobenzene containing a diphenyldiazene core with a carboxy group at the 4-position, a hydroxy group at the 3-position, and a 2-pyridylaminosulphonyl group at the 4'-position. It functions as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, antiinfective agent, gastrointestinal drug, inhibitor of EC 2.5.1.18 (glutathione transferase), drug allergen, and ferroptosis inducer. It is a sulfonamide, a pyridine, an azobenzene, and functionally related to sulfanilamide.
