5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is the monohydrochloride of 5-aminolevulinic acid. It is metabolized to protoporphyrin IX, a photoactive compound that accumulates in the skin. Used in combination with blue light illumination for treating minimally to moderately thick actinic keratosis on the face or scalp. It functions as an antineoplastic agent, photosensitizing agent, dermatologic drug, and prodrug. It contains 5-ammoniolevulinic acid.
