Ginsenoside Re is a ginsenoside found in Panax ginseng, a dammarane-type triterpenoid with hydroxy groups at the 3beta, 6alpha, 12beta, and 20 pro-S positions. The hydroxy groups at positions 6 and 20 are converted to alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1->2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside and beta-D-glucopyranoside, respectively. A double bond is introduced at the 24-25 position. It functions as a plant metabolite, antioxidant, neuroprotective agent, anti-inflammatory agent, antineoplastic agent, and nephroprotective agent. It is classified as a 12beta-hydroxy steroid, 3beta-hydroxy steroid, beta-D-glucoside, ginsenoside, tetracyclic triterpenoid, disaccharide derivative, and 3beta-hydroxy-4,4-dimethylsteroid. It derives from a hydride of a dammarane.
