Cyclopentolate is a carboxylic ester formed by the condensation of (1-hydroxycyclopentyl)(phenyl)acetic acid with N,N-dimethylethanolamine. It is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic with actions similar to atropine, used as its hydrochloride salt to induce mydriasis and cycloplegia for ophthalmic diagnostic procedures. It acts more rapidly than atropine with a shorter duration. It functions as a mydriatic, parasympatholytic, muscarinic antagonist, and diagnostic agent. It is a carboxylic ester, tertiary amino compound, and tertiary alcohol. It is functionally related to (1-hydroxycyclopentyl)phenylacetic acid and N,N-dimethylethanolamine.
