Kojic acid is a 4H-pyranone with a hydroxy group at position 5, a hydroxymethyl group at position 2, and an oxo group at position 4. It is derived from a hydride of 4H-pyran and is a member of 4-pyranones. It is an enol, a primary alcohol, and has been isolated from the fungus *Aspergillus oryzae*. It functions as an inhibitor of NF-kappaB, catechol oxidase (EC 1.10.3.1), laccase (EC 1.10.3.2), quercetin 2,3-dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.24), tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1), and D-amino-acid oxidase (EC 1.4.3.3). It also acts as a skin lightening agent and an Aspergillus metabolite.
