Proguanil is a biguanide compound with isopropyl and p-chlorophenyl groups on the terminal nitrogen atoms. It is a prophylactic antimalarial drug that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme essential for the reproduction of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax within red blood cells. It functions as an antimalarial, antiprotozoal agent, and EC 1.5.1.3 inhibitor. It belongs to the biguanide and monochlorobenzene classes.
