Lucanthone is a thioxanthen-9-one with a methyl group at the 1-position and a 2-[(diethylamino)ethyl]amino group at the 4-position. It was formerly used for schistosomiasis treatment and acts as a prodrug metabolized to hycanthone. It functions as a schistosomicide, antineoplastic agent, photosensitizing agent, DNA topoisomerase inhibitor (EC 5.99.1.2), DNA topoisomerase (ATP-hydrolysing) inhibitor (EC 5.99.1.3), prodrug, adjuvant, and mutagen.
