Hycanthone is a thioxanthen-9-one compound with a hydroxymethyl group at the 1-position and a 2-[(diethylamino)ethyl]amino group at the 4-position. It was previously used, particularly as the monomethanesulfonic acid salt, as a schistosomicide for treating infections caused by Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni. Due to its toxicity and potential carcinogenicity, it has been replaced by drugs like praziquantel. It functions as a schistosomicide and a mutagen, and is related to lucanthone. It is the conjugate base of hycanthone(1+).
