Memantine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt formed by reacting memantine with one equivalent of hydrochloric acid. It is a low to moderate affinity, uncompetitive (open-channel) NMDA receptor antagonist that preferentially binds to NMDA receptor-operated cation channels. It functions as an antidepressant, antiparkinson drug, dopaminergic agent, neuroprotective agent, and NMDA receptor antagonist. It contains a memantinium(1+) ion.
