It exists in cis and trans forms, with the trans form being more common. It functions as a plant metabolite, an inhibitor of arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase, glutathione transferase, arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase, and histone deacetylase, as well as an antioxidant. It is a hydroxycinnamic acid and a member of the catechol class.
