SAICAR is 1-(phosphoribosyl)imidazolecarboxamide, formed by the condensation of the carboxy group of 5-amino-1-(5-O-phosphono-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid with the amino group of L-aspartic acid. It functions as an Escherichia coli metabolite and a mouse metabolite, and is functionally related to succinic acid. It is the conjugate acid of SAICAR(4-).
