Carbidopa (anhydrous) is 3-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid with the hydrogens alpha to the carboxyl group replaced by hydrazinyl and methyl groups (S-configuration). It is a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of levodopa to dopamine. Although it has no antiparkinson activity by itself, it is used, commonly as its hydrate, in the management of Parkinson's disease to reduce peripheral adverse effects of levodopa. It functions as an inhibitor of EC 4.1.1.28 (aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase), an antiparkinson drug, and a dopaminergic agent. It is a hydrazine, a monocarboxylic acid, and a catechol.
