Etidronic acid is a 1,1-bis(phosphonic acid) with a hydroxy group at the 1-position, specifically (ethane-1,1-diyl)bis(phosphonic acid). It inhibits hydroxyapatite crystal formation, growth, and dissolution by chemisorption to calcium phosphate surfaces. It functions as a bone density conservation agent, chelator, and antineoplastic agent. It is the conjugate acid of etidronic acid(2-).
