Tolmetin is a monocarboxylic acid with the structure of (1-methylpyrrol-2-yl)acetic acid, substituted at position 5 of the pyrrole ring by a 4-methylbenzoyl group. It is used as its sodium salt dihydrate and functions as a nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It acts as an inhibitor of EC 1.14.99.1 (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase). Tolmetin is a pyrrole, monocarboxylic acid, and aromatic ketone, and is the conjugate acid of tolmetin(1-).
