Ceftaroline fosamil is a cephalosporin prodrug containing [4-(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-1,3-thiazol-2-yl]sulfanyl at position 3 and {(2Z)-2-(ethoxyimino)-2-[5-(phosphonoamino)-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl]acetyl}amino at position 7. It is the N-phospho prodrug of ceftaroline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Used to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections in adults, it functions as an antibacterial drug, antimicrobial agent, and prodrug. It belongs to the classes of iminium betaine, cephalosporin, 1,3-thiazole, oxime O-ether, thiadiazole, and organic phosphoramidate. It is functionally related to ceftaroline.
