Naproxen is a methoxynaphthalene substituted with a carboxyethyl group at position 6. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve pain, fever, inflammation, and stiffness associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, menstrual cramps, tendinitis, and bursitis, as well as for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Naproxen functions by inhibiting both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. It acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, antipyretic, cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 inhibitor, non-narcotic analgesic, gout suppressant, xenobiotic, environmental contaminant, and drug allergen. It is a monocarboxylic acid and a conjugate acid of naproxen(1-).
