Bruceine D is a quassinoid with a 13,20-epoxypicras-3-ene skeleton substituted by hydroxy groups at positions 1, 11, 12, 14, and 15, and oxo groups at positions 2 and 16. Isolated from the ethanol extract of Brucea mollis stem, it displays cytotoxic activity. It functions as a metabolite, antineoplastic agent, and plant metabolite. Chemically, it is a delta-lactone, pentol, organic heteropentacyclic compound, secondary alpha-hydroxy ketone, and quassinoid, derived from a picrasane hydride.
