Bupivacaine hydrochloride (anhydrous) is a racemate consisting of equimolar amounts of dextrobupivacaine hydrochloride and levobupivacaine hydrochloride. The monohydrate form is commonly used as a local anesthetic. It functions as an adrenergic antagonist, amphiphile, cholinesterase inhibitor (EC 3.1.1.8), Ca(2+)-transporting ATPase inhibitor (EC 3.6.3.8), and local anesthetic. It contains levobupivacaine hydrochloride (anhydrous), dextrobupivacaine hydrochloride (anhydrous), and bupivacaine(1+).
