It is an oral inhibitor of secretory phospholipase A2, exhibiting anti-inflammatory activity. It functions as an EC 3.1.1.4 phospholipase A2 inhibitor, an anti-inflammatory drug, and an antidote. It belongs to the classes of indoles, benzenes, aromatic ethers, dicarboxylic acid monoamides, monocarboxylic acids, and primary carboxamides. It is the conjugate acid of varespladib(1-).
