Monensin A is a spiroketal and monocarboxylic acid, a cyclic hemiketal, and a polyether antibiotic. It is the major component of monensin, a mixture of antibiotics produced by *Streptomyces cinnamonensis*. As the sodium salt, it serves as a feed additive to prevent coccidiosis in poultry and as a growth promoter in cattle. It functions as a coccidiostat, antifungal agent, and ionophore.
