Naproxcinod is a carboxylic ester formed by the condensation of naproxen's carboxy group with the hydroxy group of 4-(nitrooxy)butanol. It acts as a cyclooxygenase-inhibiting nitric oxide donor, metabolizing to naproxen and a nitric oxide-donating moiety. It is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It functions as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a non-narcotic analgesic, a prodrug, a nitric oxide donor, and an EC 1.14.99.1 inhibitor. It is a nitrate ester, a carboxylic ester, and a methoxynaphthalene. It is functionally related to naproxen and butane-1,4-diol.
