Imatinib is a benzamide formed by the formal condensation of the carboxy group of 4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]benzoic acid with the primary aromatic amino group of 4-methyl-N(3)-[4-(pyridin-3-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl]benzene-1,3-diamine. It is used as its mesylate salt in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It functions as an apoptosis inducer, tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and antineoplastic agent. It is a N-methylpiperazine, a pyridine, a benzamide, an aromatic amine, and a pyrimidine.
