Candesartan is a benzimidazolecarboxylic acid with a 1H-benzimidazole-7-carboxylic acid core substituted by an ethoxy group at position 2 and a ({2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl}methyl) group at position 1. It is an angiotensin receptor antagonist used in the treatment of hypertension. It functions as an antihypertensive agent, an angiotensin receptor antagonist, an environmental contaminant, and a xenobiotic. It is also classified as a benzimidazolecarboxylic acid and a biphenylyltetrazole, and is the conjugate acid of candesartan(2-).
