Lamivudine is a monothioacetal nucleoside analogue based on cytosine, with a (2R,5S)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-oxathiolan-5-yl group attached at position 1. It inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and is used as an antiviral drug for treating AIDS and hepatitis B. It functions as an RNA-directed DNA polymerase inhibitor (EC 2.7.7.49), a prodrug, an anti-HBV agent, and an allergen. It is also a primary alcohol, oxacycle, and structurally related to cytosine.
