Avibactam is a (2S,5R)-7-oxo-1,6-diazabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carboxamide with the amino hydrogen at position 6 replaced by a sulfooxy group. It is used in combination with ceftazidime pentahydrate as the sodium salt to treat complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis. It functions as an antibacterial drug, antimicrobial agent, and beta-lactamase inhibitor (EC 3.5.2.6). It is a monocarboxylic acid amide, a urea, an azabicycloalkane, and a hydroxylamine O-sulfonic acid. It is the conjugate acid of avibactam(1-).
