Tiagabine is an (R)-nipecotic acid derivative in which the hydrogen on the nitrogen is replaced by a 1,1-bis(3-methyl-2-thienyl)but-1-en-4-yl group. It is a piperidine monocarboxylic acid, beta-amino acid, thiophene-containing compound, and tertiary amino compound. As a GABA reuptake inhibitor, it is used as the hydrochloride salt in the treatment of epilepsy. It functions as an anticonvulsant and is the conjugate base of tiagabine(1+).
