Bromophenol blue is 3H-2,1-benzoxathiole 1,1-dioxide with both hydrogens at position 3 replaced by 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl groups. It functions as a laboratory indicator, changing from yellow below pH 3 to purple at pH 4.6, and serves as a size marker in agarose gel and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It is also used as an industrial dye. It acts as a two-colour indicator, acid-base indicator, and dye. It is a sultone, arenesulfonate ester, 2,1-benzoxathiole, phenol, and organobromine compound.
