Gatifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, a quinolone monocarboxylic acid. It is 4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid substituted with a cyclopropyl group at the nitrogen, a fluoro group at position 6, a 3-methylpiperazin-1-yl group at position 7, and a methoxy group at position 8. It inhibits bacterial type-II topoisomerases and functions as an antiinfective, EC 5.99.1.3 [DNA topoisomerase (ATP-hydrolysing)] inhibitor, and antimicrobial agent. It is also classified as an N-arylpiperazine, organofluorine compound, quinoline, and quinolone antibiotic.
