Sarcosine is an N-methyl derivative of glycine, classified as an N-alkylglycine and a member of N-methylglycines. It functions as a glycine transporter 1 inhibitor and a glycine receptor agonist. It is involved in the metabolic pathway of glycine and serves as a human, Escherichia coli, and mouse metabolite. It is the conjugate base of sarcosinium and the conjugate acid of sarcosinate. It is also a tautomer of the sarcosine zwitterion.
