Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, the 2-amino derivative of ethanesulfonic acid. It is a naturally occurring amino acid derived from methionine and cysteine metabolism. Found abundantly in fish- and meat-based foods, it is used as an oral supplement for disorders like cystic fibrosis and hypertension. It functions as a human and microbial metabolite, antioxidant, glycine receptor agonist, nutrient, and radical scavenger. It is the conjugate acid of 2-aminoethanesulfonate and a tautomer of the taurine zwitterion.
