Tepoxalin is a hydroxamic acid formed by the formal condensation of the carboxy group of 3-[5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)pyrazol-3-yl]propanoic acid with the amino group of N-methylhydroxylamine. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used in veterinary medicine to manage pain and inflammation from musculoskeletal disorders like hip dysplasia and arthritis in dogs. It acts as a prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase inhibitor, apoptosis inhibitor, lipoxygenase inhibitor, antipyretic, non-narcotic analgesic, and immunomodulator. It belongs to the classes of pyrazoles, aromatic ethers, hydroxamic acids, and monochlorobenzenes.
