Ritanserin is a thiazolopyrimidine, specifically 5H-[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one, substituted at position 7 with a methyl group and at position 6 with a 2-{4-[bis(4-fluorophenyl)methylidene]piperidin-1-yl}ethyl group. It is a potent and long-acting 5-HT2 serotonin antagonist (Ki = 0.39 nM) used in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. It exhibits minimal sedative effects and acts as a dopaminergic and serotonergic antagonist, an antipsychotic, an anxiolytic, an antidepressant, and an inhibitor of EC 3.4.21.26 (prolyl oligopeptidase). It is an organofluorine compound, a piperidine, and a thiazolopyrimidine.
