Eluxadoline is an amino acid amide formed by the condensation of the carboxy group of 4-carbamoyl-2,6-dimethyl-L-phenylalanine with the secondary amino group of 2-methoxy-5-({[(1S)-1-(4-phenylimidazol-2-yl)ethyl]amino}methyl)benzoic acid. It exhibits mixed opioid receptor activity, acting as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, delta-opioid receptor antagonist, and kappa-opioid receptor agonist. It is used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea and is classified as a gastrointestinal drug, a member of imidazoles, methoxybenzoic acids, benzamides, L-phenylalanine derivatives, and amino acid amides.
