It serves as a prodrug for quinaprilat hydrochloride, converting via hydrolysis of the ethyl ester to the carboxylic acid. It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat hypertension and congestive heart failure. It functions as an antihypertensive agent and an inhibitor of EC 3.4.15.1 (peptidyl-dipeptidase A). It contains a quinapril(1+).
