Rifaximin

Rifaximin is a semisynthetic rifamycin, a non-systemic, gastrointestinal site-specific broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is used to treat traveler's diarrhea, hepatic encephalopathy, and irritable bowel syndrome. It functions as a gastrointestinal drug, an orphan drug, and an antimicrobial agent. It belongs to the classes of rifamycins, acetate esters, lactams, organic heterohexacyclic compounds, macrocycles, semisynthetic derivatives, and cyclic ketals.
