Bilirubin IXalpha is a linear tetrapyrrole belonging to the biladienes class, with dipyrrole units of both exovinyl and endovinyl types. It is a product of heme degradation, formed in the reticuloendothelial system by biliverdin reduction, and transported to the liver as a serum albumin complex. It functions as an antioxidant and is a human and mouse metabolite. It is a dicarboxylic acid and a conjugate acid of bilirubin(2-), containing a 24G7 epitope.
