Potassium clavulanate is a potassium salt with clavulanate as the counterion. It functions as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes and has minimal antibiotic activity when used alone. It is commonly combined with amoxicillin trihydrate (as Augmentin) to treat bacterial infections by preventing antibiotic inactivation by microbial lactamases. It serves as an antibacterial drug, a beta-lactamase inhibitor (EC 3.5.2.6), and an antimicrobial agent. It contains clavulanate.
