Nicotinic acid is a pyridinemonocarboxylic acid and pyridine alkaloid in which the hydrogen at position 3 is replaced by a carboxy group. It functions as an antidote, antilipemic drug, vasodilator, metabolite, and inhibitor of EC 3.5.1.19 (nicotinamidase). It is a vitamin B3, a conjugate acid of nicotinate, and is found as a metabolite in Escherichia coli, mice, humans (in urine), and plants.
