Salsalate is a dimeric benzoate ester formed by the intermolecular condensation of the carboxy group of one salicylic acid molecule with the phenol group of another. It functions as a prodrug of salicylic acid and is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It also exhibits activity against type II diabetes. Salsalate acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a non-narcotic analgesic, an antirheumatic, a hypoglycemic agent, an antineoplastic, an EC 3.5.2.6 (beta-lactamase) inhibitor, and a prodrug. It is a benzoate ester, a member of benzoic acids, phenols, and salicylates, and is functionally related to salicylic acid.
